What is Compression Therapy?

Intermittent pneumatic compression is a therapeutic technique used in the NormaTec Recovery system that include an air pump and inflatable auxiliary sleeves, gloves or boots in a system designed to improve venous circulation in the limbs of individuals who are looking to improve muscle recovery from strenuous training, postoperative recovery, decrease symptoms of lymphedema, reduce swelling and improve flexibility.

In use, an inflatable boot, jacket or sleeve encloses the limb requiring treatment, and pressure lines are connected between the jacket and the air pump. When activated, the pump fills the air chambers of the jacket in order to pressurize the tissues in the limb, thereby forcing fluids, such as blood and lymph, out of the pressurized area. A short time later, the pressure is reduced, allowing increased blood flow back into the limb.

The primary functional aim of the device “is to squeeze blood from the underlying deep veins, which, assuming that the valves are competent, will be displaced proximally.” When the inflatable sleeves deflate, the veins will replenish with blood. The intermittent compressions of the sleeves will ensure the movement of venous blood.

Sequential compression devices (SCD) utilize sleeves with separated areas or pockets of inflation, which works to squeeze on the appendage in a “milking action.” The most distal areas will initially inflate, and the subsequent pockets will follow in the same manner.

What can Compression Therapy help?

The NormaTec Recovery System can aid in the following:

  • Muscle recovery from competetive training
  • Improve post-operative recovery
  • Improve flexibility
  • Increase circulation
  • Enhance pressure-to-pain threshold in elite athlete recovery
  • Prevention of blood clot formation and peripheral inflammation in the legs after surgery.
  • Chronic Lymphedema in the arm

What is Normatec?

NormaTec is the leader in rapid recovery—our systems give a competitive edge to the world’s elite athletes, coaches, and trainers. Our goal is to establish recovery as an integral part of every athlete’s training, and we feel NormaTec systems are the best way to accomplish that. The NormaTec PULSE Recovery Systems are dynamic compression devices designed for recovery and rehab. All of our systems use NormaTec's patented PULSE technology to help athletes recover faster between trainings and after a performance.

Our systems include a control unit and attachments which go on the legs, arms, or hips. They use compressed air to massage your limbs, mobilize fluid, and speed recovery with our patented NormaTec Pulse Massage Pattern. When you use our systems, you will first experience a pre-inflate cycle, during which the connected attachments are molded to your exact body shape. The session will then begin by compressing your feet, hands, or upper quad (depending on which attachment you are using). Similar to the kneading and stroking done during a massage, each segment of the attachment will first compress in a pulsing manner and then release. This will repeat for each segment of the attachment as the compression pattern works its way up your limb.

The NormaTec PCD uses a patented Peristaltic Pulse waveform that mimics normal healthy physiology. Using pulsing compression just like your body does when your muscles contract and relax, it naturally and easily improves your circulation and rapidly alleviates your symptoms.

What to expect?

The massage-like treatment lasts 30 minutes but can be done longer depending upon the comfort level and desired result of the individual. You may choose to use the attachments on your legs, hips or arms. It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing when coming in for the treatment and feel free to bring a book, ipad or phone to occupy your time!
